Wild At Heart movie review - Any Day Now

Wild At Heart

Set in the 70's, the film opens with Rudy (Alan Cumming) performing s a drag queen show in a small time joint as he makes eyes at the attractive, straight-laced Paul (Garrett Dillahunt) who works in the D.A.'s office. They have a quickie in a car and we see what could lead to an odd couple relationship but things are about to get more complicated.

The following morning, Rudy walks into his neighbors apartment to turn down their loud music to find the mother missing and the mentally handicapped Marco sitting in the corner. This tugs at Cummings heart and he wants to help Marco, esp after a run in with family services. Rudy enlists Paul to help find a way that Rudy can help Marco and keep him out of the state's hands.

Paul and Rudy end up adopting the kid and living together until the threat of exposure threatens to rip Marco from their lives and they take to the courts to win respect and maintain the same rights as any couple.

The binding glue of the movie is the stellar performances of Cumming and Dillahunt as a unique couple.  Cumming esp shines in his role as he really bring home the passion of a loving parent and eccentric individual. The movie has a powerful message and will be embraced by those who support the same sex marriage issue. However, I did find the overall plot a bit too convenient though it does pick up for an unexpected ending.

Still, this is a nice movie to take in for the performances, esp Cumming, who does bring a lot of passion to this role and makes this movie worth seeing.  There is not much else I can say about this film except that overall, I enjoyed the film and would give it a B.

"Any Day Now" opens today at the Main Art Theatre in Royal Oak.
