The Moneypenny Experiment - May 16th 2009

So, anyway...with the holiday weekend coming down the stretch we thought that we would share our pre-summer camping trip to get you ready to roll

It's been a long, dull winter full of florescent lighting and static electricity and my face was starting to turn grey. Thanks to a small window of opportunity, we decided to use a random 3-day weekend to go camping. It's a little early in the year to go up north, but we like to throw caution to the wind (a wind which would later come to bite us in the ass).
It was time for the MCB to branch out and get some sun.

After some debate about comfort vs. rustic camping, we settled on the Tubbs Lake State Forest Campground. The campground features two campsites, one being an island. Naturally, we chose the island. A tiny speck on the map, Tubbs Lake Island only offers a handful of campsites, hand pumps for water, vault toilets, and a boat launch.
What it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in scenery.

Everything would have been just tits, if it hadn't been for the blistering fucking cold wind that chapped our asses all weekend long It was brutal, and relentless. There wasn't enough alcohol or firewood to keep the freeze at bay, but we gave it a damn good try.

The campsite was a haven for birds of all kinds, and was exceptionally lovely from every degree. Too bad being stuck on a bump in the water left us extremely exposed to the elements. It was looking pretty bleak, but my assistant never fails me. What does he do when shipwrecked on a cold, blustery island in the middle of nowhere?

He makes a fuckin kite. (Duh).

Out of two twigs, a plastic bag, some Velcro strips, twine, an old rag. an industrial measuring tape and a day's worth of boredom, my personal MacGyver fashioned a home-made kite that was most impressive.
For two exhausted drunks drying out in the cold Michigan air,
this was enough to evoke hysterics.

We realized through this camping trip that
1.) Our dogs hate camping,
2.) There is a limit to how many layers you can wear effectively
3.) My assistant can fall down and pee himself.
(My editor wishes I didn't print that).

All things considered, I would have to say that
I would visit Tubbs Lake Island again, but much later in the year.
Don't go camping yet kids, it's too early.

Stick to the shelter of your local watering hole and
buy your favorite blogger a beer!

Home from the wild, thawed out, and ready to get back to basics.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled program...

Cheers,
Moneypenny
